On Tuesday, 23rd of January 2024, EUGENE hosted the FaRMer Multiplier Event at Shiambelos Restaurant in Limassol, Cyprus. The event was attended by over 20 enthusiastic individuals who shared their experiences and explored the innovative solutions brought forth by the FaRMeR initiative. The goal of the project is to revolutionize crop protection methodologies and empower farmers with sustainable practices.

At the event, the FaRMeR team presented the project’s background, goals, and achievements so far. They emphasized their dedication to helping farmers and revealed the FaRMeR project platform. Attendees had the opportunity to explore the online platform designed to enhance farmers’ resilience through the “Score My Resilience (SMR) Tool.” This user-friendly tool aims to empower farmers to assess their risk management capabilities and skills. It sparked curiosity and discussions among the farmers, setting the stage for an open dialogue.

Insights from the Open Discussion: Farmers Speak Up

During the event, farmers participated in an open discussion where they shared their challenges and experiences. One shared story was about a farmer who produces four tons of apples annually. Despite their efforts, the existing insurance coverage only protected up to 500kg, which left them vulnerable. This vulnerability highlighted a gap that the FaRMeR project aims to address by promoting more effective risk management strategies.

Another narrative came from a smallholder farmer who manages an old and traditional grape field in the mountains. The field, passed down from her father, posed unique challenges, making it nearly impossible to turn a profit. However, the farmer continued her work out of love for the land, revealing the personal connections that drive many in the agricultural sector.

Individual Testing and Feedback: Farmer Platform in Action

During the event, farmers were given the opportunity to test the FaRMeR platform themselves using the SMR Tool. The FaRMeR team collected feedback through questionnaires, which provided valuable insights into the platform’s usability and effectiveness. This feedback will help ensure that the platform aligns with the practical needs of the farming community.

Success and Calls for Action: A Missed Governmental Presence

The Multiplier Event was a successful gathering that brought together local farmers and facilitated networking among them. While attendees appreciated the initiative, there was a collective feeling that the absence of governmental representatives was a missed opportunity.

In essence, the FaRMeR Multiplier Event in Cyprus not only revealed the project’s progress and platform but also provided a forum for farmers to voice their concerns and aspirations. As the project progresses, it remains committed to promoting resilience, bridging gaps, and creating a sustainable future for agriculture in Cyprus.
