Nicosia, Cyprus — Eugene has joined forces with Zero Food Waste Cyprus in a heartwarming initiative to combat food waste and support those in need. Last Saturday, representatives from Eugene participated in the community-driven effort in Nicosia to rescue surplus fruits and vegetables and redistribute them to individuals facing food insecurity.

Zero Food Waste Cyprus is an umbrella of projects targeting local fruit and vegetable markets to eliminate food waste generation across the island. Currently, the initiative serves a market in the old city centre of South Nicosia (Saturday Aftermarket) and a market in North Cyprus, Girne (Wasteless Wednesdays).

The strategy is both simple and effective: dedicated volunteers gather unsold produce from local farmers’ markets, produce that would otherwise be discarded. This rescued food is then transported to a centralised collecting point. At a designated time, individuals facing food scarcity, including refugees and other citizens in need, arrive to receive fair portions of the donated fruits and vegetables.

To maintain order and fairness in the distribution process, the organisers have implemented a systematic approach. Each recipient is assigned a number, ensuring a smooth and peaceful distribution of the rescued food. This thoughtful method has not only prevented potential conflicts but has fostered a friendly and supportive atmosphere during the distributions.

The impact of this collaborative effort goes beyond addressing food waste; it provides nourishment to those who need it most and creates a sense of community solidarity. Most recipients have been refugees, but the initiative is open to all citizens facing food insecurity, emphasising inclusivity and support for the entire community.

For those interested in learning more about this inspiring initiative or getting involved, additional information is available on the Zero Food Waste website https://zfwcy.org/ and social media platforms. Eugene encourages everyone to join in the effort to reduce food waste, support local communities, and make a positive impact on the lives of those facing food insecurity.
